What's In a Name

LucyFiftyThree.

Where does it come from?

Some of you may know my darling little girl is named Lucy (and so appropriately if I do say so myself), but do you know why? I grew up a fan of Lucille Ball, Dick van Dyke and other superstars of the fifties watching black and white TV at the ripe age of 3. My mother will tell you, embarrassingly enough, I used to demand that I "want to watch the 'whites!'"

So when my husband and I found out we were expecting, we discussed a TON of names and agreed on next to nothing for a boy but immediately knew a girl would be Lucy. Not only do I have a stash of Lucille Ball collectibles that have been building since I was twelve, but my hubby's darling grandmother infamous for cheesecake and Italian Wedding Soup, is also a Lucy. How super convenient for me, right?

As for the rest, I've always been inspired by designs of the fifties, from sweetheart necklines to the full circle skirts and pedal pushers; many of my designs have a retro feel or inspiration. The classic polka dot print mixed with the sassy salsa-like ruffles of my signature dress, "I Love Lucy" is much like the story of Lucy meets Ricky. And so, Fifty Three is actually representative of a year: a year chosen to coincide with my darling's initials, LFT.

And there you have it.

A Gift From the Heart

Nothing marks the entry of a precious new baby in the world like making it official...with a name.

I went to my dear friend Carolina's baby shower yesterday to celebrate with friends and family the anticipated entry of Austin Kenneth into this world. So much fun it is to feel the movement in mama's belly, ooh and aah over onesies with puppy dogs and footballs, and see tears of joy and excitement for what is soon to come.

Now I know that the cost of diapers for a newborn is astronomical and a new mother can take what help she can get, but I like to give something that will last longer than you can say "blow-out."

For Austin, I made a quilt with his name on it.

Patchwork front in stimulating colors, appliqued name, soft minky back.

Yay! I think she liked it!

What good are you? What can YOU do?

From one of my favorite children's books, Put Me in the Zoo, I'm here to prove myself in the wide world of handmade goods...again. So here's what I can do. You decide.

Am I one of the must-sees? Or a stinker? : )

T Minus 7 Days to LucyFiftyThree!

Business cards are ordered.

Patterns are drawn out.

Fabric is chosen.

I have some well-worth-it sleepless nights ahead as I prepare to make my comeback on Etsy offering some super cute clothing for little girls.

So what have I been doing for the past 8 months?

Made some Halloween costumes.

  • Borrowed (or stole, depending on whose opinion you request) my brother's laptop.

  • Celebrated the holidays with my family.

And here we are! Did you miss me?
